Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A close friend and long-time colleague of Mark Pilgrim says he re-modernised radio and helped bring it into the 21st century.
Pilgrim passed away on Sunday morning after battling stage 4 lung cancer.
The 53-year-old documented his journey on social media as he fought bravely.
He is survived by his fiance and two children.
Radio presenter Alex Jay worked with Pilgrim for many years and has described him as a sweet and reliable man, and a solid friend and colleague.

"It is a big loss and we are really sorry he lost the battle we needed a championship victory this time against cancer.”
Jay says the overwhelming response to his Pilgrim's death shows the impact he had.
“He made it his job to expand communication. He is a person who brought the socials into broadcast, he was the guy who recognised the potential to bring in the social network stuff onto the air and making it part of his extended communications.
“He was a good communicator and that's why people have a connection with him because he has built up these connections over the years.”
