Maritzburg College SGB views political incident 'in a serious light'

The School Governing Body at Pietermaritzburg College says it's committed to engaging on the issues that have come out of an incident involving three learners who were seen showing support for a political party.

The Pietermaritzburg school has been in the spotlight after the matric pupils posted a photo of themselves in school uniform holding t-shirts endorsing the EFF.

On Monday, the education department halted their disciplinary hearing, saying it'll launch a full-scale probe into allegations of racism - an investigation the SGB and the college have welcomed.

The School's Governing Body has released a statement saying it still views the incident in a serious light. The KZN Department of Education has temporarily halted the governing body's disciplinary process against the Grade 12 pupils - saying it wants to investigate allegations of racism as being a possible root cause to the matter.

The SGB and Pietermartizburg College say they welcome and fully support the investigation.  The school says it respects all pupils' rights to hold their own opinions.

It says several programmes are in place to support and strengthen social awareness engagement to encourage debate and freedom of expression.

The SGB believes the pupils' actions went against the Schools Act but respects that a disciplinary tribunal might not.

College says its primary aim is to ensure pupils are fully prepared for their pending exams.
