Marikana report: Plans to transform SAPS

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko says the operating model and leadership structure of the South African Police Service are among the key areas to assess in implementing the recommendations of the Marikana Report.

The report was the result of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry's investigation into police action during a violent strike in the North West in 2012.

Forty-four people including 34 miners were killed during the labour unrest at Lonmin mine. The report criticised the police's conduct and their operational plan.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega's fitness to hold office was also called into question.

Briefing Parliament's Police Portfolio Committee on the implementation plan, Nhleko said they are looking into transformation and operations in the police force which are at the centre of the report.

''There are basically five broad areas that would have to be looked into. The first one is of course the question of the organisational structure and culture of the SAPS.

''There is a need to look at the question of the leadership fitness. Do we still have the relevant people to execute what should be done? And this means competency and skills assessment among other things, particularly when it comes to officers,'' he said.
