Many schools shut amid flooding: KZN Education

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal says many schools are shut in the province because of the devastating storm.

Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says they are advising principals to assess the situation but says the heavy rains, strong winds and flooding have forced many classrooms to close their doors.

"The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal advises teachers, parents, caregivers to use their discretion whether or not to send their children to school."
He says the department will monitor the situation and give an update later for Wednesday's school programme.

Meanwhile, Dylan Meyrick who's with IPSS Medical Rescue says they've been working around the clock in storm-hit areas - north of Durban.
"There are houses down, many people trapped in houses. I think we are on incident number 30 and we still have another six or eight we haven't got to yet."
Meyrick says driving through submerged roads puts the lives of drivers, their passengers and emergency teams in danger.

He says they've had to rescue motorists who became trapped after trying to make their way through flooded roads.
