The struggling power utility was forced to implement the latest round of rolling blackouts after Unit 5 of Medupi Power Station tripped, taking some 700MW capacity with it.

Earlier on Monday Eskom warned that the electricity system was under severe pressure.

Four generation units broke down while the return of two others had been delayed.

Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said the cold and wet weather also pushed up the demand for electricity.

"Today (Monday) a generating unit each at Matla and Kriel power stations as well as two generating units at Camden Power Station experienced breakdowns.
