Paramedics say they received a crash alert on Monday morning, apparently involving a train and a car near the unit 5 off-ramp from Higginson Highway.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said when they arrived, it was established that there hadn't been a collision.

Reports from the scene are that the motorist appeared to have lost control of his vehicle, which rolled down an embankment and onto the train tracks.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene and saw the vehicle extensively damaged on the railway tracks below. Paramedics made their way down to the vehicle and found a single occupant in the vehicle.

"On examination, it was found that a male believed to be in his twenties had sustained a gunshot wound to the head as well as associated injuries from the accident. Unfortunately, the man had sustained fatal injuries, and there was nothing Paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene."

Meanwhile, authorities in Merebank are on the scene of a deadly shooting after a body was recovered from under the M4 southern freeway bridge.
