Verulam police have opened a murder case after a man was shot dead in Canelands this morning.

He was apparently approached by three suspects on Vincent Dickerson Road.
"It's alleged that this morning just after 7am, a victim believed to be in his forties, was driving his vehicle at Vincent Dickerson Road. While he was stationery due to the traffic - three unknown suspects fired gunshots showed up and towards him. Police are investigating a murder case," the police's Thembeka Mbhele said.
Police say the circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown.
Reaction Unit SA's Prem Balram says there were children in the car.
"Three children aged 8, 11, and 14-years-old were found near the vehicle. According to witnesses, a red VW Polo had stopped alongside the Fortuner and opened fire on the vehicle. Paramedics had assessed the driver and found he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head, neck and body. He was found deceased on scene," Balram said.
