A taxi owner has been shot dead in Pietermaritzburg this morning.
The man was shot in what is believed to have been an ambush along Bombay Road. Police say a case of murder has been opened at Mountain Rise SAPS. No arrests have been made.
Initial reports indicate the taxi owner had been travelling in his bakkie to fetch one of his drivers when the incident occurred.
Netcare911's Athlenda Mathe says paramedics could do very little to save the man's life.
"When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on scene, we found that the taxi owner had already died due to the gunshot wounds he sustained.
"We found him in his bakkie. He was actually found slumped in the driver's seat. The man was declared dead on scene," she said.
