Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
A man has died after his bakkie crashed along Higginson Highway near Chatsworth.
Netcare 911's Chris Botha says the exact cause of the accident which happened in Umhlatuzana is not known.
"We found that the man was still trapped in the vehicle. The bystanders were trying to pull him out but tragically, paramedics found that he had died due to the very extensive injuries he had sustained," he said.
At the same time, the QuadPara Association of South Africa is reminding motorists to buckle up before they are driving.
According to the associations CEO, Ari Seirlis, every year about 450 South Africans suffer spinal cord injuries because of road accidents.
This Friday, motorists will see quadriplegic and paraplegic members from QASA stationed at various petrol stations and will be asked to sign a pledge to buckle up.
"We also encourage motorists not to use their mobile phones - that's talking or texting - because distracted driving is now the largest cause of road crashes in this country.
"So please don't text and drive. Buckle up - we don't want new members," he said.
