Man in hospital after Illovo Beach near-drowning
A 34-year-old man's receiving treatment in hospital after a near drowning incident at Illovo Beach near Amanzimtoti, south of Durban.
The man and his wife were swimming near a holiday resort in the area when they got caught in a rip current at around 6pm yesterday.
Emergency services say the man battled to keep his wife's head above water and in doing so breathed water into his lungs.
Medics found the man in a serious condition. Although exhausted, his wife was in a stable condition.
Netcare911 treated the man on the scene before taking him to hospital.
