Updated | By Shaun Ryan
A man believed to be in his 70s has lost his life following a drowning incident at the Durban harbour yesterday.
An inquest docket has been opened after the vehicle he was travelling in crashed into the port in the vicinity of the Pier 205 Container Terminal.
An operation including Police Search and Rescue divers, firefighters and paramedics was conducted to recover the man's body.
ER24 paramedics say the vehicle was retrieved at around midnight with a crane being used to hoist the vehicle out of the water.
While, IPSS spokesperson Paul Herbst was one of the divers who entered the water.
He says the recovery was a challenging procedure.
"The water is extremely cold and visibility is zero. So it makes working conditions for divers extremely hard. Fortunately, the police search and rescue divers are well-experienced and have been around for a very long time which makes the job much easier," he said.
