Authorities say the man was knocked over while trying to cross the northbound carriageway just before five this morning.

According to police, it took more than four hours before the body of the man, believed to have been in his 30s, was collected by a mortuary van.

Police spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says the motorist allegedly fled the scene - no arrests have been made.

"At this stage, we don't have the particulars of the vehicle that allegedly knocked this person. We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward to give us information," Zwane said.

Two police vehicles were stationed at the scene during peak traffic and a section of the right lane was cordoned off - causing major delays for motorists in the area.
