Man struck by lightning in Verulam

A man has died after being struck by lightning in Verulam, north of Durban this afternoon.

The man had been walking on a bridge along the R102 at the time.
Reaction Unit's Prem Balram says medics were called to the scene after a motorist witnessed the tragedy.
Balram says the man suffered extensive burns to his body.
"They found that the man showed no signs of life. They confirmed this by using medical equipment. He was certified deceased a few minutes later. The man has been identified as a Verulam resident, his wife was called out to the scene a short while later," he says.
KZN police have opened an inquest docket.
