Man critical, driver flees after truck crash in Durban south
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
An adult male, believed to be homeless, is in a serious condition after he was struck by a heavy goods truck while sleeping under a bridge along Edwin Swales, just after South Coast Road, south Durban.
The incident took place just after 5 O' Clock this morning.
According to Advanced Life Support Paramedics the driver of the truck lost control and veered off the road before crashing into supporting pillars of the bridge.
ALS spokesperson Garrith Jamieson is urging motorist to avoid that route as officials are still the scene.
"The truck driver is alleged to have absconded from the scene, however the truck had collided with a pedestrian who was sleeping under the bridge", he said.
"The male believed to be in his early 30s has sustained serious injuries and stabilized by EMRS and ALS paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital", Jamieson said.
"SAPS, the Fire Department and RTI are on scene to investigate. The scene is still active and I would advise motorists to avoid this area at all costs", he said.
