A man is receiving treatment in hospital after being struck by a train near Shakaskraal, outside Ballito on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast.

Yesterday's incident comes just one day after a man was killed, also trying to cross the tracks, in the same area.

IPSS Medical Rescue's Paul Herbst says the force of the impact knocked the man about 20 metres and down an embankment.

"The rescue unit was called to assist the ambulance division in setting up a pulley system with a specialised basket to get the man topside," he said.

Once the man was pulled up the embankment he was reassessed by paramedics.

"He is in a critical condition and sustained an amputated arm," said Herbst.

Medics have now responded to three incidents involving pedestrians being hit by trains in the same area over the past week.
