A man and a child have been rushed to hospital after they were attacked by a dog in Durban's Morningside area.

While the circumstances surrounding the incident aren't yet clear, reports from the scene are that a woman was walking with the girl, aged about 11, on Gordon Road on Tuesday morning when the animal escaped from its yard.

It's believed a man who works at a school nearby ran to help them and shielded the child from the dog.
"Paramedics were shown a man who is believed to be in his 40s had sustained multiple dog bites. He had been attacked by a pit bull,” said ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.
"Advance Life Support Paramedics stabilised the man on scene before they rushed him through to their nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required.
"Paramedics also transported the young child as a result of this horrific incident."
