His last visit to the area was four months ago.

Malunga was today joined by eThekwini municipal officials during the walkabout.

The narrow alleys here are littered with beer bottles, empty cartons and plastics.

As the delegation from the office of the Public Protector made their way through the area, many residents looked on as they went about their daily chores, washing in buckets and selling fruits and snacks from make shift tuck shops.

The Deputy Public Protector spoke to several residents who complained about the poor living conditions, lack of decent sanitation, electricity and the hazardous environment for raising children.

A 23-year-old mother told of how she lost her young child last month who came into contact with an illegal electricity connection.

Others say they're still waiting for materials to rebuild their houses after they burnt down last year. They say action is only taken when elections are around the corner.
