Mall workers describe robbery that 'was like out of a movie'

A robbery at a jewellery store at Gateway Mall in Umhlanga has been described as like something out of a movie.

Several workers at the shopping centre have spoken to us about what they saw unfold yesterday.


A robbery at a jewellery store at Gateway Mall in Umhlanga has been described as something out of a movie. 


Several workers at the shopping centre have spoken to us about what they saw unfold yesterday.


An employee at one of the shops in the centre says they spotted a group of armed men rushing towards Narandas jewellery store just before 10 am.

The worker says loud bands rang out moments later and they ran for cover and started praying. 


Another employee says they were coming up an escalator when they noticed a robbery was in progress.

They have described as like a scene out of a movie saying it lasted a few minutes.


Another worker told Newswatch they were still too traumatised to talk.


When Newswatch visited Narandas earlier,  its wooden doors were shut and windows sealed off.


Management at Gateway Shopping Centre says they are working with police, adding they value the safety and security of their shoppers and tenants. and that no shots were fired. 


Last month, Narandas' branch at Pavilion Shopping Centre was hit. 


Police say in that incident, the suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewellery without firing any shots.
