Malema draws comparison between Trollip, Lawack's removal

EFF leader, Julius Malema says the party is not apologetic about the removal of Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Athol Trollip.

Trollip was voted out by opposition councillors last night in a motion of no confidence.

Earlier in the day, DA councillor Mbulelo Manyathi had abstained from a motion of no confidence vote that resulted in the removal of the Council Speaker Jonathan Lawack.

At a press conference, Malema said Trollip's removal was not a rejection of the will of the people. He says it's because he's arrogant.

"Why can't they humble themselves and subject themselves to the process because they've got a recourse. They can go to court. The court will make a pronouncement. The court must tell us - why can't the same meeting that removed the speaker - remove the mayor," Malema said.

He says the voting out of Lawack and Trollip are being treated differently by the DA.

DA leader, Mmusi Maimane also held a press briefing today.

He says Trollip's ousting is another bid by the opposition there to loot the metro's coffers.

"This is still an effort to recoup the funding in the elections to continue to steal a city and ultimately we hold the ultimate view thatsays this is not the benefit of the people of Nelson Mandela Bay," Maimane said.

Maimane says they are in the process of revoking Manyathi's membership.

"He will no longer be a member of the DA. He's already categorically stated that he's leaving. The sooner he does that, the better for him," Maimane said.
