Malala Yousafzai: World needs to stand up to ‘gender apartheid’

Education activist Malala Yousafzai has urged the global population to stand up against gender apartheid.

She says the world has turned its back on the systematic oppression of girls and women in Afghanistan.

 

Yousafzai says while there are many conflicts and humanitarian issues in various parts of the world, the global community should not buy into the notion of only caring about one crisis at a time.

 

The 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate delivered the 21st Nelson Mandela Lecture at the Johannesburg Theatre on Tuesday.

It marked the 10th anniversary of the former president's death.

 

"If you are a girl in Afghanistan, the Taliban have decided a future for you. You cannot attend a secondary school or university; you cannot find an open library where you can read.


“You see your mothers and older sisters confide and constrained in a similar way. They cannot leave their house on their own, not to work, not to go to the park, not to get a haircut, not to even see a doctor. And the punishment for doing these very ordinary, everyday things is severe."
