Maimane stresses IEC independence is crucial

Democratic Alliance leader, Mmusi Maimane, has emphasised the need for the country's electoral body to remain an independent, unbiased entity.

He spoke earlier in Johannesburg on a number of political developments.

Referring to last week's by-election in Nquthu which the IFP won convincingly, Maimane said the Independent Electoral Commission must be applauded for the manner in which the poll was run.

"The ultimate form of accountability for any government is the electoral accountability. Imagine if we lose the power of the IEC come 2019? Then elections can be rigged. We have to work hard on institutional capacity. That is why all of these appointments are important - whether they are judges, public protectors, or chapter nine institutions, all of them. We would want for South Africans, when they express their will in 2019, that it is in fact truly the will of the people," he said.
