"We wonder what kind of a man of God fails to forgive his fellow man whilst seeking forgiveness from God on a daily basis?" provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo said in a statement.

Maimane is a preacher and elder at the Liberty Church in Randburg, Johannesburg. He was not immediately available to comment on the youth league’s statement.

The league said they supported Zuma, accepted his apology and said he had showed true leadership.

In a televised address on Friday, Zuma apologised to the nation for the way he had handled the Nkandla matter.

The Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday that Zuma flouted the Constitution when he failed to comply with Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's remedial action on the upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.

The court ruled that the National Assembly similarly failed in its constitutional duty when it set aside Madonsela's report.Zuma received a warm welcome at a drought relief Imbizo in Melmoth at the weekend, his first public appearance after the apology.

Sabelo said they were inspired by Zuma’s "sense of responsibility" when faced with criticism from those driving a narrow agenda for regime change.

The youth league said the matter provided a lesson for the nation on the powers of Chapter 9 institutions like the Public Protector.Sabelo said the ANCYL wished Zuma well in his work until 2019.
