Mahindra targets African continent
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
Mahindra South Africa wants to become the driving force behind the supply of vehicles to the African continent.
The company launched its assembly plant at the Dube TradePort, north of Durban yesterday. The R95-million facility will assemble Mahindra’s 'Pik Up' range of single and double cab bakkies.
The automobile giant has promised to create employment opportunities and provide skills training. CEO, Rajesh Gupta, says when fully operational, the plant will produce 4 000 vehicles a year:
"It will also give us the possibility of looking at this as a manufacturing hub for the rest of Africa, and if we can do it successfully it will lead to it being a fully specialised facility going forward", he said.
"It is a clear indication from our side that if we keep on succeeding the way we have been things will develop and that is what will lead to a bigger contribution to the economy of the country", Gupta said.
