Magaqa's uncle, Vuma says they still can't believe he's gone as the 35-year-old had showed signs of recovering.

"It's been very bad but we trust that the Lord will be with us until everything is over. As a family, we leave it to government to sort it out," he says.

The Umzimkhulu ward councillor and two others were shot in July, in what police have described as an ambush-style attack. He'd been in a critical condition since then and passed away on Monday.

The attack is believed to have been politically motivated. The Hawks' Hangwani Mulaudzi says they are also investigating claims that Maqaga died after he was poisoned at the hospital he had been admitted to.

"In terms of these rumours about poisoning - we are not taking them lightly. There is going to be a post-mortem where we will find an official answer to what is being said," he says.
