Madonsela's Gupta probe likely to get additional funding
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Department of Justice might have to trim expenditure if Public Protector Thuli Madonsela needs more money to fund investigations into the controversial Gupta family.
Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan, says Treasury and the Public Protector will have to discuss additional funding with the Justice Department if she needs it.
Madonsela requested an additional R3 Million to fund investigations after the Dominican Order, an order of Catholic priests and brothers, and the DA asked her office to probe the Guptas.
The family has been accused of interfering in state affairs. Gordhan says Treasury would be more than happy to assist.
"The way the Public Protector's budget works is similar to the SARS budget in that the Department of Justice in that instance, the National Treasury in the SARS instance actually appropriates the money, however that money is meant to be transferred to these institutions," he said.
"Any additional funding that is required within a fiscal year, before September, is then looked into," Gordhan said.
