Madonsela must probe RDP housing: Council

The NEDLAC Community Constituency has slammed the office of the Public Protector, saying it's giving preference to high profile investigations and neglecting other cases.

This week, Thuli Madonsela told Newswatch she will be releasing a report into shoddy RDP houses in Pietermaritzburg in a few months' time.

Last week, Nedlac released a statement, demanding that Madonsela release her findings immediately.

Madonsela says RDP housing investigation is quite involved, as it incorporates the allocation process of the houses as well as the quality of the structures built.

She says there have been a number of challenges with the probe.

"I've engaged on numerous occasions with the MEC for Human Settlements here and I kept getting undertakings - it will be done, the tender is being re-issued. When Premier Zweli Mkhize was still here, I was engaging with him and I received promises. I started engaging with the new premier," she said.

Nedlac's convener Dumisani Mthalane says Madonsela's office has been dragging its feet on the matter.

"We wrote to her, she never came back to us. Now she's talking through the media, she doesn't warn us. She was phoning us every now and then - telling me that these houses are going to be rebuilt. Nothing has happened.

"Even that communication broke down. We are very disappointed by her conduct," he said.

Nedlac is a statutory body that liaises with government entities and the community on labour issues and economic development.
