Madonsela can join EFF Nkandla case, court rules

The Economic Freedom Fighters says yesterday's Constitutional Court ruling allowing the Public Protector to join its bid to have President Jacob Zuma pay back some of the money spent on Nkandla is significant.

The court ruled that Thuli Madonsela should be allowed to join the party's court application as a third respondent.

The case is expected to be heard early next year.

Spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi says the Public Protector will be given the opportunity to clarify her powers in relation to the Office of the President and properly explain her remedial action against Zuma.

"Her office is the one that has been under direct attack, ridiculed by both the president, the ministers and the members of the ANC.

"This case is significant in the broader fight against corruption and the joining in of the Public Protector means the public is now officially, regardless of creed and political affiliation, finally represented," he said.

In her report last year, Madonsela recommended that Zuma pay back some of the R246-million spent on Nkandla that was not linked to security.
