Updated | By News24
Former first lady Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is recovering in hospital after undergoing back surgery.
Neeran Naidoo of the Nelson Mandela Foundation issued a statement on Monday, at the request of the Mandela family, confirming that Madikizela-Mandela was currently in a Johannesburg hospital.
"Her first surgery, for compression of the spinal nerve and pain relief, took place on March 8. It was followed by a second procedure on April 14 to assist with her recovery," Naidoo said.
The family "wishes to express its appreciation of the support they have received", she added.
Loved ones of the stalwart say they are grateful for the "continuing respect for their privacy".
Madikizela-Mandela was admitted to hospital on March 7.
News24 previously reported that a source close to the family had said that Madikizela-Mandela was struggling to recover from the surgery.
"Her being a diabetic does not help either. Remember she is old as well," said the source, who asked not to be named.
