eThekwini metro police say motorists can use the M19 again.
Both sides of the route connecting Durban and Pinetown have been reopened after Thursday morning's protest action at the off-ramp to Reservoir Hills.
Residents, believed to be from the Quarry Road Informal Settlement, began demonstrating in the early hours and blockaded routes with boulders.

The police's Boysie Zungu says calm has also been restored in Umlazi's M Section on Sukuma Road.
"At the M19, they are standing along the road waiting to be addressed by the councillor. At Umlazi, they are arranging a meeting that they are proceeding to the venue where they will meet with the counsellor."
