Their getaway vehicle crashed on the M13 near Paradise Valley in Pinetown before a shootout ensued.

Three suspects were shot dead by police while a fourth person was hurt and taken to hospital under police guard.

Forensic experts are combing the area - searching for weapons and other evidence.

Pathologists have also arrived at the scene to remove the bodies of the deceased.

The suspects allegedly robbed cash-in-transit guards of two boxes of money.

Police were alerted and a chase ensued. The car rolled on the M13 near Stapleton Road - throwing one of the suspects from the car.

The other three suspects jumped out of the wreckage and opened fire on police.

The officer's vehicle is covered in bullet holes but neither were hurt.

Both carriageways have been closed in the vicinity of the crime scene. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area.

Motorist, Jono McNamara was headed home after an appointment in Umhlanga but became stuck in the traffic jam that followed the shootout.

"I was in the middle lane and just came off the split into the M13. All lanes were blocked - East and Westbound. The Golf was still in the middle lane.

"EMS were all blocking the roads. They were on the Eastbound side. There was Metro and SAPS there - assisting and doing a fantastic job," he says.
