Local women's group says sexual offence increase 'no surprise'
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
Durban based women's organisation 1WomanPact says the recent crime stats are no surprise.
This as Police Minister, Bheki Cele has released the country's quarterly crime statistics yesterday which revealed a 5% increase in the number of sexual offences reported between October and December.
Inanda and Umlazi police stations having recorded the highest number of rape cases in the country.
1WomanPact's Pamela Padayachee says even though there's been an enormous stride in government level, alot of work still needs to be done on the ground.
She says looking at dealing with GBV in community level there hasn't been a major shift instead there's been a major growth.
"If you look at the numbers at Inanda, KwaMashu, Newlands East even Chatsworth there is an upward drive of such cases", she said.
"This goes back to community activism and also about how women feel about reporting as women are not motivated to do because there is often no action taken", Padayachee said.
