Local climate talks to unpack Loss and Damage Fund
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
As the COP28 summit gets underway in Dubai, climate talks are also being held in Durban this week.
The local discussions are being hosted by GroundWork and South Durban Community Environmental Alliance at the Diakonia Council of Churches.
Environmental activist Desmond D'sa says one of their main topics is fast-tracking the longtime-discussed Loss and Damage Fund.
The fund, paid for by rich nations, is meant to benefit countries that are vulnerable to climate change.

"People are adamant that the UN conference occurring in the UAE was supposed to implement decisions that were made at the Paris COP, but also during Glasgow and last year, we had it at Egypt.
"Those decisions were supposed to be Loss and Damage Fund, but that has not been allocated for South Africa and any other country and that Loss and Damage Fund was supposed to be brought in as a transition to use to start moving away from oil and gas."
At COP28, it's expected an agreement will be reached on how much money will go into the fund.
