'Litter booms' to be installed in Durban South
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Environmental group the Green Corridor says it will be installing litter booms in the waters in Durban South in the coming weeks.
World Oceans Day was marked on Thursday.
Litter booms are large devices that intercept and trap mainly plastic waste and other floating litter in rivers before they end up in the sea.
The waste is collected by local community co-coordinators and sorted for recycling.
Currently, over 20 are installed in the north of the city, including at Blue Lagoon and in Umhlanga.

The Green Corridor's Siphiwe Rakgabale says plastic waste is a major problem in KZN - but can be resolved with more awareness.
"If people were to take ownership of their area and space and learn about the different types of plastics, recycling then we would eliminate all these issues that are affecting our marine life even climate change itself.
"In areas like Inanda, I have pictures of a cow feeding on plastic because people don't have a waste management system where they collect and they go and find a spot and dump it there."
