LISTEN: Security guard killed in Pinetown heist

Two guards were targeted in a cash-in-transit heist in Pinetown this morning - resulting in the fatal shooting of one of the security guards.

The pair was targeted by a gang of at least six armed suspects in the vicinity of Moodie Street and Dales Avenue. 

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says one guard was declared deceased on scene.

"One of the security guards had suffered multiple injuries and had, unfortunately, passed away when paramedics arrived. The second guard sustained critical injuries and was stabilised on scene by advance life support paramedics before being rushed through to a nearby hospital for the urgent care he required," he said. 


Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane says one suspect has been arrested. A firearm was also seized. 

"A number of six suspects approached security guards who were busy transporting cash. The suspects started to shoot towards the security guards. A case of murder, attempted murder and robbery was opened by the Pinetown police for further investigation," he said. 

Moodie Street, Dales Avenue and Hill Street have been closed to traffic while authorities comb the area.
