Convicted murderer
and former Paralympian star Oscar Pistorius has served half of his
sentence at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre, west of Pretoria.
Pistorius shot and killed then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his Pretoria home in 2013.
He claimed he had mistaken Steenkamp for an intruder hiding in the bathroom but was convicted of murder in 2015.
The Steenkamps’ lawyer, Tanya Koen, says the parole board convened late last month without consulting Reeva’s parents.
“The family is a bit distressed and quite distraught both because an appointment was set up and then cancelled and because they have become aware that Pistorius is now eligible for parole, and not in March 2023.”
However, the Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says Pistorius and the Steenkamp family still need to go through a dialogue process before parole can be granted.

“What we have done is to start with the victim-offender dialogue processes which are totally different from parole consideration.
“I can say the Oscar Pistorius’ file is not yet before the parole board. You cannot take an inmate’s profile to the parole board for consideration if you have not completed the victim-offender dialogue.”
