LISTEN: Nine due in court following violent protests in Richards Bay

Nine people are due to appear in court today facing charges of public violence after dramatic protests in the Richard Bay CBD yesterday.

Police say a man was detained for allegedly carrying a dangerous weapon.

About 100 people then marched to the police station demanding he be released. A scuffle the broke out between protesters and officers.Later in the day, angry crowds shut down the bus and taxi ranks in town.
SAPS spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
