LISTEN: KZN residents bemoan 'shocking' food prices

KwaZulu-Natal consumers say they are feeling the pinch as food prices continue to rise.

The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group reports the average cost of a household food basket increased by R46,29 (0,9%) between April and May.
It's now climbed to R5 466,59 from R5 420,30 in April.
The data comes from the group’s latest Household Affordability Index.

The index tracked prices on 44 basic food items across 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries in areas including; KwaMashu, Umlazi, Isipingo, Durban CBD, Hammarsdale, Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, and Mtubatuba.

The Union Against Hunger recently launched an online petition calling on the government and retailers to act to lower food prices.
It hopes to collect about 100,000 signatures as part of its campaign to reduce the price of foodstuffs.
