LISTEN: Acclaimed Durban band, Gangs of Ballet, share a Heritage Day message with fans

All this week, we've been posting Heritage Day (September 24) features with KZN celebs, asking them what heritage - and their own identities - means to them. In our final feature, we chat with local band Gangs of Ballet - about how they plan on spending their Heritage Day tomorrow.

Born-and-bred Durbanites - brothers Josh and Brad Klynsmith, and Jonothan Rich - say South African music is a melting pot of different cultures, which makes our local music so unique.

They say that as a band, they want people to feel good when they hear the group's music. "Music acts as a leveler; it brings people together - and with the messages that we send out, we try to send messages that inspires a positive change in people," said Brad.

Speaking ahead of Heritage Day this weekend, the band say they won't be performing - but they do intend to spend this culturally-significant day with their families, doing the most South African thing possible - having a traditional braai. (After all, it is Braai Day, too, they muse.)

For Rich, 'heritage' may be something from the past, but he also believes it's a platform for people to grow and establish a way forward as individuals - and a country.
