LISTEN: Family member recounts La Mercy home invasion
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The members of a La Mercy family whose 9-year-old boy was shot during a home invasion say they are relieved to have survived the ordeal.
A bullet hit the child in the stomach when the five robbers opened fire while making their getaway.
The boy's uncle says his own daughter realised something was wrong on Saturday afternoon, when she opened the front gates. He says the men first asked about a creche.
"She opened the gate for them and she heard the guns cock. She ran back into the house and shut the door. She locked it. She got hold of my two other daughters, who were sitting in the lounge and she grabbed them and said we're being robbed and to get into the bedroom. As soon as they locked themselves in, these guys started breaking down my room door," he says.
