Liquor Traders: Alcohol sales ban a blow to tavern market

The Liquor Traders Formations says it believes a total ban on the sale of alcohol will have a devastating effect on the tavern market and the 250 000 direct jobs linked to the sector.

On Monday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that from Tuesday we're going back to Level 3 - meaning no alcohol will be sold.
The organisation calls on government to continue to allow traders to sell alcohol for off-site consumption.
The Liquor Traders Formations' Lucky Ntimane says they have introduced programmes in KZN and in four other provinces - which address challenges taverns face.

"We have been running behavioural change programmes on the ground that seeks to change the narrative and also the behaviour of some of our patrons and consumers and encourage them to consume liquor in a more responsible way.
"The programme seeks to empower liquor traders and ensure that they become champions - not only in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic but also in compliance issues at a tavern level as well as trader level, which is your independent liquor traders."
