The SA Liquor Brandowners Association has welcomed the government's decision to introduce a temporary ban on alcohol products saying it's pleased it's kept liquor sales open at places like restaurants and shebeens.

SALBA says what it didn't want was another lengthy, total ban.

President Cyril Ramaphosa told the country last night that as part of measures to contain the spread of Covid-19, over the long Easter weekend, the sale of alcohol - from retailers and bottle stores - for offsite consumption won't be allowed from Friday until Monday.

The Association's Sibani Mngadi says sales revenues plunged some 36 billion-rand and tax revenue by 29 billion rand due to the previous bans.

"We will still be engaging with government to better understand what informs decisions to limit the sector to operate over the weekend."
