Liquor Council pens letter to President, requests ban lift

The National Liquor Traders Council says if government wants to save the livelihoods of millions of people it needs to urgently lift the ban on alcohol sales.

The formation, which represents independent liquor traders and taverns, wrote a letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday.


It hopes to receive a response by Friday. 


Yesterday, the country's largest beer maker, SA Breweries announced it was laying off 500 temporary workers, due to revenue suffering under a third ban.

"The president has announced that there isn't any support coming for the liquor industry so the best thing is he should allow us to trade so we can continue living in a rightful way and a legal way." 


"We will be doing so in a disposable way in doing so in supporting the government's effort in fighting the pandemic," he says. 


Under alert level 3 restrictions, alcohol sales and on-site consumption are not allowed. They were introduced last month to ease pressure on hospital emergency wards.
