Liquor Authority suspends license of KwaMashu's Artizen Lounge
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The KZN Liquor Authority is urging owners of establishments to avoid prioritising profits at the expense of the safety of their patrons.
This after there has been another fatal shooting, this time at popular social spot Artizen Lounge in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
Earlier this month an unruly patron was allegedly kicked out by bouncers, and would later return with a loaded gun and allegedly shot at other patrons. One person was wounded before he was shot and killed by someone else.
The liquor authority's acting CEO Bheki Mbanjwa says their investigations revealed the establishment lacked tight security measures, among other things.
"What was found was that the license holder had extended the seating area beyond the original planning approved by the Liquor Authority and that is a very serious breach of the conditions of the license. There is a process that must be followed if you want to extend. You need to apply to declare that extension with the authority. So those were the areas of non-compliance which led to the suspension of the license," Mbanjwa says.
