The American wife of slain former KZN rugby player, Lindani Myeni says she no longer wants to raise their children in the US anymore because they won't be safe.

Myeni was shot and killed by police in Hawaii last month.

They'd responded to reports of a burglary when the shooting took place.

A memorial service for Myeni was held at the Empangeni Rugby Club on Thursday

Lindsay Myeni had to be comforted by family as her husband's friends and family spoke about the gentle giant and humble man he was.

Every few minutes, she would turn around to check on their baby girl and toddler son, who sat calmly throughout the service.

After the memorial, Lindsay told reporters says she felt Lindani's death would only sink in after the funeral.

She says she now needs the government's help to get her citizenship in her children's home country.

"We always wanted flexibility to be in whatever country that the kids can prosper in and right now, I feel like this is the safest country fro them. I do not want to raise kids that are considered black in America. It's not safe."

She says she hasn't received help from the US government and is still waiting for Honolulu police to return Lindani's belongings to her.

Myeni will be laid to rest on Saturday.
