The life of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
South Africans are mourning the death of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, who passed away this morning. The revered monarch leaves behind a rich legacy and was widely respected.
Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini was aged 72 when he passed away this morning.
He was born in July 1948 in Nongoma a small town in northern KwaZulu-Natal.
He's the eldest son of King Cyprian and his second wife, Queen Thomo.
He was coronated as the eighth Monarch at the age of 23 on 3 December 1971 - three years after his father's death.
Zwelithini's last public engagement focused on Gender-Based Violence and the empowerment of women.
"I want to remain to rest assured that I am in their corner. I commit myself to their safety for as long as I live. This is a war that I and all who identify as Zulus embrace."
He's being remembered for his achievements in fighting against poverty and persevering with Zulu tradition and culture.
Zwelethini's reign was not without controversy, however.
During his reign - he was accused of meddling in party politics during the apartheid era and inciting violence during public speeches.
King Zwelithini is survived by his six wives and 28 children
My most sincere and deepest sympathy to the Zulu Nation and to the Royal Family with the tragic passing of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. May His Majesty's soul rest in peace.
