During the launch of the party's election manifesto this week, president Cyril Ramaphosa emphasised that no one must be discriminated against or attacked on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Durban-based activist, Sbongiseni Khumalo, feels hopeful.

"I know there are a lot of programmes, government structures that are specific for LGBTI. If they are saying they are continuing it, there is sill a gap in terms of visibility of the official."

Ibanathi Ngcobo says the public needs to see members of the ANC championing gay rights.

"If you have a ruling party that says they are championing LGBTI but within their own structures still discriminate, still get to a point where LGBTI candidates are not being considered as much from their heterosexual counterparts, then you've got a bigger problem here.

"Its good and dandy for the ANC to jump up and down and say that they are going to protect us but if they in their own structures have not gotten to a point where they prioritise LGBTI leadership in their own ranks to champion LGBTI issues.

But Ndisoh Mazibuko says more to be done.

"In terms of changing the mindsets and setting up an effective system that will respond to social ills and hate crimes, as I look back at our history until today, we have come a long way as gay communities."
