Level 1: Alcohol sales extended to Friday, venue restrictions eased

Under Alert Level 1 of the lockdown, you will be permitted to buy alcohol on Fridays, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday.

In his address to the nation, Ramaphosa said the country's ready to move to Level 1 of the coronavirus lockdown, thanks to a drop in the transmission rate. 


"The sale of alcohol at retail outlets for home consumption is now permitted from Monday to Friday, from 09h00 to 17h00. 


"Alcohol will be permitted for on-site consumption in licensed establishments only and with strict adherence to the curfew.  


He says we'll have to settle into a new normal and learn to live alongside the virus, which is why we must exercise precaution by wearing masks in public, washing our hands regularly and maintaining a social distance.

The maximum number of people attending a funeral has increased. 


"The maximum number of people who may attend a funeral is increased from 50 to 100. Night vigils are still not permitted. 


"Venues for exercise, recreation and entertainment – such as gyms and theatres – which were limited to no more than 50 people, will now be allowed to accommodate up to 50% of their venue's capacity ."


However, current restrictions on sporting events remain in place.  


The President says health protocols must be observed at all times. He's urged people not to get comfortable.
