Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced the members of his new executive council following a marathon coalition negotiations with the DA.

The DA turned down the option to govern with the ANC on the eleventh hour after the parties failed to reach and agreement on power sharing.


The ANC failed to retain its majority in the country's economic hub province for the first time in history in the recent elections receiving 34% of the vote, forcing the liberation movement to enter into a coalition.


The new provincial cabinet consists of seven returning ANC deployees, and one new member from each coalition partners; Inkatha Freedom Party, Patriotic Alliance and RISE Mzansi.


"We accept, without any conditions, the outcome of our elections and the desires of our electorate that all political parties must work together to run our provincial government,” Lesufi said.

"In doing so, we must be mature, we must be sober, we must understand each other at all times. These are uncharted waters, these are opportunities that are presented to us by our voters. 


"We want to show our voters that we understand the mandate fully, we understand the decisions that they've made."


The changes has also seen the Department of Community Safety being moved to the Office of the Premier.


He also merged Finance with Economic Development, while Sport, Arts and Culture has been paired with Education.


Infrastructure Development and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs will also be under one roof. 


However, the Premier introduced a new portfolio, namely the Department of Environment.
