Legal expert says KZN top for financial crime

A legal analyst says he believes the market in KZN is flooded with fake and illicit banknotes

Sunil Singh, from Sunil Singh and Associates, says it's impossible for ordinary civilians to differentiate between fake and real money. 

It follows comments from the SA Reserve Bank that KZN remains the number one province where counterfeit banknotes are found.

"People are becoming innovative and obviously wanting to get rich quickly. The resources that they have at their disposal which is contrary to the Reserve Bank Act and obviously to the Treasury as well.

'The sentence it carries is quite a hefty sentence, which is obviously jail time.

"But as far as the government is concerned, we've got to constantly reinvent and keep our fingers on the palm to make sure that whatever measures these criminals are taking, it has to be counted with our intelligence to prevent that from happening, and there is a constant development of the system."
