Lectures to continue at DUT after students set off fireworks on premises

The Durban University of Technology's management says the academic programme will continue this week after yesterday's commotion at the ML Sultan campus.

Registration, accommodation and funding were the main issues when students set off fireworks on the premises.

The DUT's Alan Khan says the unrest isn't going to affect lectures.

"A group of people lit and threw fireworks to frighten, intimidate and to unsettle students and staff at the ML Sultan campus in Durban. The academic programme was not suspended."

The SRC, which has taken responsibility for letting off the fireworks, says some students who rely on funding from NSFAS, are yet to receive their bursaries which means they can't register for the new academic year.

The council's Andisiwe Dyantyi says they want to meet with management this week to resolve their issues.

Meanwhile, the staff at the University of KwaZulu-Natal were protesting yesterday over safety concerns - and wages - among other issues.

The workers, who belong to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Staff Union, gathered at the university's Howard College campus.

Their concerns over safety stem from the recent spate of sometimes violent protests on campuses.

UKZN's management says it's made every effort to resolve the outstanding demands made by the union - adding it will continue discussions with the union.
